The workshop this Sunday were a huge success and we had an incredible crowd turn out. Yeah!!!
It seemed to me like all the artists were busy teaching away and that all the students were soaking in the knowledge and fun!!

Playing with Fiber
4 week workshop with Joetta Maue
Wed 6:30-9:30PM, June 8 - June 29

Celebrate fiber and all of its wonderful facets through this 4-session class where instead of focusing on an end product we focus on how taking risks and giving ourselves the freedom to "just play" opens up possibilities in our creative practice.

Each week we will focus on something a little different including:

-Needle point stitches and learning about how far we can push them or how we can combine them to make unique and fun textures or apply them to unexpected objects- these textures can become a signature look or a canvas to build with. - Applique and how we can use found fabrics and objects to create dimensional collages through the most basic technique of attachment. Learn to take risks and do the unexpected. And how we can make anything work with fiber. - Yarn and its many uses through crochet and knitting sculpturally - Liquid- Play with painting fiber, watering it down, using stains like coffee and tea and combining this with other techniques to create truly layered pieces of art. Allow the natural tendency of the fabric to bleed to be a gift instead of a burden. This class is all about having fun, pushing technique, and letting yourself think outside of the box. Students are strongly encouraged to bring materials to class such as found object, found fabrics, text, small items, buttons, whatever inspire you!

Day of Fiber Workshops:

June 12, 1-5PM REGISTER

The Day of Fiber Workshops will consist of the following programs. The cost of entrance will be $20 to participate in as many or few workshops as you'd like!

Introduction to Sculptural Crochet -- led by Candice Thompson

Crochet is the process of using a hook to pull loops through other loops to create fabric. Each stitch can be conceived of as a pixel or building block; the variation of size and number of stitches lending a distinct three-dimensional form. Only one stitch is dealt with at a time, making it easy to adjust along the way and experiment without a formal pattern.

In this workshop you will learn to use the basic building blocks of crochet-- chaining, single crochet, and double crochet-- to create various three-dimensional shapes and sculptures of

your choosing. No experience with crochet is necessary and all levels are welcome. Come with a project in mind or simply a desire to play and improvise.

Size Matters: Playing with Knitting Scale -- led by Katya Usvitsky

A workshop that explores both alternative materials and scale in knitting, to get students thinking about knitting as an art process, not just a utilitarian one. While still using traditional techniques, students will be challenged to create with handmade knitting tools. As a starting point, I will supply giant (upwards of 1.5” wide) knitting needles and non-traditional ‘yarn’. The exploration of all the possibilities contained within the basic stitch will be the most exciting part, and the class will not necessarily be focused on creating a final or functional product.

Students will be encouraged to bring materials they are interested in experimenting with, but are not required to bring anything.

Playing with Plastics -- led by Carol Sogard

Workshop participants will learn about:

The environmental impacts of plastics and the limitations involved with recycling plastics.
Ideas for reuse of plastics and other materials with an environmental impact.
How to heat fuse plastic through the use of an iron and then utilizing this new durable material to create a variety of products: pillows, toys, bags etc...

One-Shot Screen Printing -- led by Mira Gelley

Create a patterned screen printed piece of fabric using one shot screens: Create quick screens using tape and/or freezer paper and print a loose pattern onto a piece of fabric. Build up the pattern by altering your original screen (pulling off tape, adding tape) and printing on top of or next to other forms. This is not meant to be a precise or planned pattern. Rather, forms are created quickly and new forms are made to interact with existing ones.

Needle Felting -- led by Mariangela Tan & Justin Alan Volpe

All the basics of needle felting, showing how you can make characters to play with!

Telephone, the Exquisite Corpse and Free-Style Embroidery -- led by Jan Johnson

Telephone is a game where a sentence is whispered into one player's ear, and then that player whispers again what was heard into the next player's ear, and so forth the sentence continues around to all the players until the last player receives the message. The last player then states aloud what was heard. The result can be quite different from what was really said and often quite funny and strange. This game and the Surrealist drawing technique of the exquisite corpse are similar and brought together here in a workshop that teaches free-style embroidery stitches and carbon-transfer patterning. Each participant will work on the same "sampler" drawing, each unaware of what the others have drawn in thread except for a line or two that is left visible for the next player to attach the second part to the first part. This process will continue until all the players have finished a drawing made with an embroidery stitch or a combination of stitches. After the last player has completed their part, the "drawing" will then be unmasked to reveal the composite sampler.

Wet and Wild Felting -- led by Ricki Dwyer

Felting workshop with a wide variety of weird materials to felt into and with. Different colored wool, straight off the animal as well as carded roving, wire, yarn, industrial felt, wire mesh, fabric, coins, beads, etc. Participants will be taught how to wet felt as an interactive process, getting their hands and feet wet to agitate the material. Will be conducive to all ages. They will produce a piece of felt by the end of the day, but the emphasis would be on experimenting with different materials, and a variety of forms to felt on top of to shape their piece if they choose to do so.

Play- Part 2

Today, I will feature the 3 more "site specific" installations in Play.

Kathryn Greenwood Swanson's bird piece was recreated and scaled down in order to be included in the exhibit. Kathryn could not be there to install the work and I was beyond nervous about the time and effort of installing such a piece- but she made it beyond easy. Truth be told what should have been the hardest piece to install was actually one of the easiest. Thank you Kathryn.

It also is definitely a star in the exhibit taking up the space by the window just beautifully...

2nd is the work Primary Colors by Mary March who came in a week before the show, all the way from San Francisco, to install this new work. She designed the work specifically with the Textile Arts Center in mind - taking advantage of its gorgeous windows and its emphasis on weaving.

These shots were taken before the opening so do not display how it filled up with stories over the evening. Mary created hundreds of hand drawn images on canvas to be woven into the piece so that the viewer could add their personal story to the piece. Tomorrow I will be heading to the gallery and will be sure to take some pictures of the now activated piece.

As you can see Mary's piece looks gorgeous in the window with sunlight streaming in. The last site specific work that was done was an idea of my making of combining the work of Maggy Rozycki Hiltner and Mallory Feltz.

Mallory who did the work of the stuffed animals in plexi boxes was in my last exhibit at the Textile Center and Maggy is someone who's work I have admired for quite awhile now and... when I saw the 2 pieces I wanted to include them both but Maggy's Shop for America was sooo long it took most of the wall and since the ceilings are so high seemed like it would not feel as lively as I would like. So with the permission of both artists I installed them together to make what I think is a fun and exciting collaboration.

The opening this past Friday was a huge success. The crowd was well a crowd, always a good thing. The gallery was full, the artists flew in from all over the U.S., the art looked great, the wine was drunk, and the night was grand.

Play is an experience we all know- one that can bring us laughter and perhaps at times bring us tears. The dualities that exist within play are what make it a rich subject for the 2011 spring exhibit at the Textile Arts Center.

Most everyone has happily played on the playground but also been left out, made fun of, and teased. Through the exhibit this complexity within play is revealed. In addition to the thematic thread of the exhibit, we also celebrate the extensive risks and playfulness that emerging fiber artists are exploring in their medium and techniques.

Play is an experience we all know one that can bring us laughter and perhaps at times bring us tears.
In the 2011 spring exhibit, Play, at the Textile Arts Center we want to explore play and all of its multi-faceted sides and experiences. We ask artists who work in fibers or fiber techniques to submit works that deal with the idea of play. Feel free to interpret this theme widely. All types of work are welcome for submission from performance, video, wall work, sculpture, conceptual work, to interactive. Please note we are looking for contemporary interpretations of fiber and textiles.

Exhibition dates:
May 6-June 24, 2011- Subject to change.
Opening Night: TBD
Artist Talk will be scheduled in June.

The Textile Arts Center is a gorgeous street level space located in the heart Brooklyn, NY. The center provides an environment for the professional, the artist, and the student. With an invested interest in the conservation of hand weaving and other fiber arts, the Center offers a fully equipped studio, gallery space, and emerging fiber artist studio residency program.

The space has high ceilings, large rounded street level windows, and 4 cement columns in the center of the space. Please feel free to submit ideas specifically for these architectural elements. Feel free to stop by the space to see it before writing site specific proposals.
The Textile Arts Center is located at 505 Carroll Street in Brooklyn between 2nd and 3rd Avenue.

Submission Details:

Eligibility

All artists over 18 are eligible.
Work can utilize any medium but must primarily use fiber or fiber techniques.
Large scale, installation, site specific, video, silk screen, and performance work is welcome.
Work must be original.- small editions are acceptable
Work must be created after 2005

Joetta Maue is a full-time artist, curator, and arts writer mostly working in fibers, based in Brooklyn, NY. For those of you that could not make it- you missed out!!! The artist talk was wonderful. We had a great turn out and a very intriguing group of artists there.

Interestingly all but one of the artists came to working in fibers through a more traditional "art" medium. Quite a few of them through painting which was evident in their work, and a ceramicist, printmaker, and 2 sculptors. It was fascinating to hear about all their paths to the medium of fiber and how their backgrounds affect their approaches to their work.

Some running themes was how most of the artists really enjoyed and were nourished by the meditative process of working in fiber. A few even used the word prayerful and I thought it was quite accurate as a description.

In addition a majority of the artists were raised in the Midwest and talked a lot about the labor and work ethic that is part of Midwestern culture. I myself am a born and bred Midwesterner and have always felt that this affects the choices I make as an artist working in fiber and embroidery so it was fun to hear others talk about their connection to this.

I loved hearing Meredith Grimsley talk about how her pregnancy affected her work and identity as a women and artist. She quoted the bible, psalms 139 about pregnancy saying:

You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb.
: ...; my bones were not hidden from you, When I was being made in secret, fashioned as in the depths of the earth.

I also in general loved hearing Janice Jakielski as she was a very fun spirited artist - her talk let me understand some of her choices in her work much better. Specifically realizing that in in a way all of her works are self portraits.

And John Paul Morabito's talk enlightened me on his motivation and experience as an artist through his work and the control involved in it.

Their will be pictures to share soon and as I recorded a part of each artists talk you will get a chance to hear some of it soon.

Something to look forward to.

Cutting Edge: A Celebration of Fibers

The exhibition, Cutting Edge: A Celebration of Fibers, curated by Joetta Maue, a celebrated textile artist recently known for her series of embroideries and images exploring intimacy. This exhibition will feature works from various fiber artists and present a large array of textile mediums from stationary installations to video work.

“This exhibition focuses on how artists are using fiber and techniques in truly unexpected ways either through their subject matter or the actual techniques of construction”, explains Ms. Maue. “Fibers are without boundaries - the purpose of this exhibit is to show that there are no rules. The show is going to be an incredible, not to miss exhibit with truly exciting work from prominent and unknown fiber artists. Any one who has an interest in fiber as a means of expression should not miss it.”

Textile Arts Center is located at 505 Carroll St, Brooklyn, NY 11215.

The above works are 2 gorgeous watercolors by Jee Hwang & a sweet glass piece by Mary Coss.

A view of the gorgeous pillows and bears by Orly Cogan. I promise when I go back I will get some detailed shots of these. The saying's on the pillows generally reference the rejection and struggle of being an artist. Such as "we are not accepting applications at this time."

Here is my only shot of Leslie Nichols amazing typewriter portrait. The entire face is built out of layered typewriter text. I have no idea how she plans these pieces but they are quite lovely and technically very impressive. I guess I need a close-up of that too.

Some lovely newspaper dresses by the incredibly sweet and adorable Sarah Bahr, an old Sampler by Leila Daw, and an incredible sampler by Rubi McGrory- the bead work on it is astounding.

I mean WOW I have never seen cockroaches look so gorgeous!

a shot of the wall with small works- so many of which were just incredible!!! Mr. X Stitch contributed the hilarious small round cross stitch pieces. Eloise de Hauteclocque let me exhibit her charming and thoughtful gloves, and the many, many teeny tiny french knots by Iviva of FiberGraf were quite impressive.

and just as a sneak peek to the last post this week on from the tongue..., I will share some artist shots tomorrow just in case you love having a face to a name. Here is Iviva Olevick & Jon Baker from the collaborative group FiberGraf in front of Marilyn Henrion's gorgeous quilt.

Here are some images from the installation of the from the tongue... exhibit. Of course, once I saw my images I realized that I forgot a few walls that I will have to shoot when I go back- that always seems to happen. I also have some close ups I will be sharing too... but today lets just take a stroll around the gallery. The above image is of the entry gallery, with Bren Ahearn's large sampler to draw the folks off the street in.

Right next to Bren's work is the incredible piece, The Great Milky Way, by Richard Saja- the piece is the transcription of a poem that he wrote- in braille. The work is amazing both visually and conceptually. And then many more lovely works gather on the wall.

a warm thursday night...

So today as you visit imagine this: a warm Thursday evening in the heart of Tribeca, jazz music on the radio, a glass of white wine in hand, great art all around, fabulous people milling about, and that way you can begin to experience the wonderful opening of from the tongue...

The image above shows the gallery before the rush began- artists Sarah Bahr and Lathorial Badenhausen catch up.

and then by 8:05 pm, the opening officially started at 8, the gallery was packed with artists, art enthusiasts, fiber lovers, and the like, and the crowd stayed throughout the evening.

Folks really enjoyed getting to meet other fiber and text artists many of whom they knew online and now know in person. It was wonderful how many of you, my blog readers, came out to the show and how many virtual friendships became real ones. Everyone gave cheers with wine and talked fabulous art.

At about 9:00 we had a live performance by artist Marcy Chevali, in the brown dress in back, who wrapped us with fiber and words as the crowd read words from her unraveling "balls of yarn." Artist Iviva Olenick of FiberGraf assists in the unraveling.

and by 10 pm the crowd had began to disperse, the art absorbed, the wine all drunk, the friendships made. (artist Grant Olsen looking dapper in his gray suit)

What a wonderful night in a wonderful space with absolutely utterly wonderful people.
Tomorrow I will share shots of just the install so you can see the art more clearly.

About the curator.

Joetta Maue is a full-time artist, mostly working in fibers, based in Brooklyn, NY.
Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions across the world and in New York. Some recent exhibitions include the solo shows: Waking with You at the Elizabeth A. Beland Gallery, Home Sweet Home at Corridor Gallery Project Space, and The Process of Forever at the Basement Gallery. She has also recently been included in the group exhibitions: Fiber Art International Exhibition in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Designing Thread at The Gallery at Mt. Ida College.

You can see a feature on Joetta in the January issue of Needle Magazine.

Joetta's work is featured in a number of upcoming exhibitions including a solo show in 2012 at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY.
She will also be a featured artist in the forthcoming book Indie Craft edited by Jo Waterhouse available this October.

Joetta authors the popular art and craft blog Little YellowBird as well as regularly contributes to Mr. X Stitch and the Textile Arts Center blog.
